Weekend of big eats: Charlotte Street Hotel & Roka

17 Jul

The rain was made tolerable by this sweet summer afternoon tea spread. I prepared by not having much for breakfast (just half a box of M&S sizzling fruit salad), which meant I could stuff myself silly on sweets.

– Sandwiches: smoked salmon and dill, honey roast ham with grain mustard, prawn and avocado with lemon mayonnaise, cucumber and cream cheese
– Scones (one had orange peel in it…scrumptious!) with clotted cream and strawberry jam
– Fresh strawberries
– Sweet plate: kiwi and passion fruit pavlova, strawberry tartlet, chocolate brownie, raspberry mousse/cream

Few bites of sushi bought from Japan Centre, cherries from Waitrose and some Lindor chocolate

With a couple of hours to kill and no shops open on Sunday, I had a leisurely baby breakfast before the pig-out lunch.

– Lemon tea with honey
– Fruit salad

Uhhh…where do I even start describing the array of food at the Roka Sunday buffet lunch? My friend CK was the one who alerted us to this great deal. You get an aperitif (Bellini or Bloody Mary), free-flow wine, sushi, sashimi, salads, udon, soups and all other yummy dishes, a choice of 1 main course and a dessert platter for the table to share. And all this for a bargainous £42. I ate so much this was pretty much my meal of the day. My stomach is still sticking out from all that food.

My favourites from the buffet spread: cold homemade tofu in gazpacho, seared butterfish, tomato salad and tofu salad. There was also a pickled veg that had orange peel in it that had me thinking of Chinese New Year. Just eating from the sushi/salad bar alone will fill you to the brim.

More highlights:
– To drink: Bloody Mary, non-alcoholic raspberry & cucumber mocktail
– Starters: spicy miso soup with fishballs (made with prawn stock), calamari
– Main: grilled sea-bream with yuzu – nicely grilled with that smoky charred that you get by barbequeing your meat, but didn’t really taste any yuzu
– Dessert: Coconut, kiwi and passionfruit parfait, raspberry pannacotta with almond biscuit, fresh fruit

Hi Missy, yes the wine is unlimited. The buffet is amazing! I could get full on just the salad bar.
